Job Description

A well-resourced SEND school in Birmingham is seeking an Autism Support Assistant to work with pupils who have communication differences, sensory needs, or social interaction challenges. You’ll support children who benefit from calm routines, visual communication, and structured guidance throughout the school day.

Your role will include providing 1:1 and small-group support, using visual schedules, modelling communication strategies, and helping pupils regulate during sensory or emotional difficulty. Some children may become overwhelmed by noise or change; others benefit from patient reassurance and predictable routines. You’ll help create an environment where pupils feel safe, understood, and able to take part in learning.

Working closely with teachers, therapists, and the wider SEND team, you’ll deliver consistent support that reflects each pupil’s needs and strengths. This role suits someone patient, observant, and confident working with children with autism.

Desired Experience + Qualifications

  • Experience supporting pupils with autism or SEND.

  • Calm, patient communication style.

  • Confidence using structure, visuals, and modelling.

  • Strong safeguarding awareness and consistent practice.
