Job Description
As a Key Stage Transition Mentor, you will support pupils who are navigating the shift from Key Stage 2 into Key Stage 3, helping them build confidence, routine, and emotional steadiness as they adapt to new expectations. The transition to secondary school can be daunting for many young people, and your guidance will help smooth the process, providing pupils with the reassurance and structure they need to settle in successfully.
You will work with pupils who may struggle with organisation, increased class sizes, new subjects, or the faster pace of secondary learning. Your role will include guiding pupils during lessons, checking in with them at key points throughout the day, supporting their emotional needs, and teaching practical strategies to help with planning, time management, and social confidence. You will also lead small-group sessions that introduce pupils to routines, expectations, and practical skills they need to thrive in their new environment.
This role suits someone who is empathetic, observant, and committed to helping pupils develop resilience, independence, and a sense of belonging during this important transition.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Support pupils adjusting to Key Stage 3 routines, expectations, and lesson structures.
Provide one-to-one mentoring for pupils experiencing anxiety or confidence barriers.
Lead small-group sessions focused on organisation, independence, and emotional regulation.
Help pupils navigate the school day, including transitions between classes.
Update pastoral staff on pupil progress, concerns, or emerging needs.
Desired Experience
+ Qualifications
Experience supporting pupils in upper Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3.
Strong communication and rapport-building skills.
Ability to teach organisation, time management, and coping strategies.
Warm, patient approach with an understanding of transition-related anxieties.
Strong safeguarding awareness and reflective practice.
About the School
This Oxford (OX2) secondary school is known for its inclusive ethos, well-planned transition programmes, and commitment to ensuring pupils feel supported both academically and emotionally from their very first day. Rated Good by Ofsted, the school places a strong emphasis on pastoral care and ensures that pupils arriving from a wide range of primary settings receive tailored support to help them settle quickly and confidently.
The school offers structured induction pathways, dedicated transition hubs, and a wide range of early support interventions designed to help pupils build organisation skills, manage routines, and navigate the expectations of secondary life. Staff work closely across pastoral and academic teams to create a seamless experience for new Year 7 pupils, particularly for those who may arrive with additional learning or emotional needs.
Classrooms are well organised, teachers are approachable, and support staff are highly valued for their role in ensuring pupils feel safe, known, and equipped to participate fully in lessons. Families frequently praise the school's communication, welcoming culture, and strong focus on wellbeing. This is an excellent environment for someone who wants to make a meaningful difference at a pivotal moment in a young person’s education.
