Learning Outcomes

One in 6 children have sensory processing difficulties. Children with Sensory Processing Disorder are faced with a range of difficulties related to perceiving the sensory world around them.

Sensory experiences can help children understand their environments and support them to feel safe and secure. A well-developed sensory system is essential for both cognitive and social intelligence and is therefore required for children to become successful learners.

In this 6 hour course, we will work together to understand the make-up of the EIGHT
senses that our brains utilise to process different signals and messages it is sent, and how a child with SPD may then go on to process that information.

Sensory Processing reflects the interesting and unique ways every person’s mind can work differently. Therefore, if a child is diagnosed or you are seeing early signs of challenges in this area, it is important to fully understand how to support their needs and how quickly we can fine tune our practice to ensure this difference does not interfere with their learning and development.

  • Introduction to the EIGHT senses.

  • Learn to identify sensory differences and signs of Sensory Processing Disorder.

  • Explore considerations around the impact that the environment has on children with Sensory Processing needs.

  • Recognise the mental health impacts that children with Sensory Processing needs experience.

  • Understand the different sensory-related behaviours and possible overlapping conditions.

  • Develop strategies and techniques to implement within your setting to meet the individual needs of each child.

I can highly recommend the Phase Two Autism Training, it was brilliant. It was perfectly pitched to where we are at as a school, with both assurances for the things we are already doing, as well as in depth work around key aspects of autism and how we needed to progress.

I liked the different ideas and strategies that can be used to support the children in my setting. A lot of aspects will help me in the classroom setting.

Shelley Pressick

Four Dwellings Primary Academy

Sara was an excellent trainer. She was very aware of our needs and responded accordingly. She pitched the talk and discussion/activities just right. As a SENDCo herself, she was able to talk from relevant and first hand experience and answered our questions with up to date knowledge. That made a real difference.

The 7 senses information was great - learning of the two other senses and how these can affect children was really useful.
