Job Description
A specialist SEND school in Coventry is seeking a dedicated 1:1 Mentor to work full-time with a single pupil requiring additional support. This rewarding role is ideal for someone with previous experience as a Learning Support Assistant, Teaching Assistant, or Mentor, particularly supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
Working closely with teaching staff and the wider support team, you'll provide consistent one-to-one guidance, helping the pupil develop academically, socially, and emotionally while building a positive and trusting relationship.
Key Responsibilities
Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a pupil with SEMH needs
Build a positive, consistent relationship that promotes trust and engagement
Support the pupil's emotional wellbeing, confidence, and personal development
Encourage positive behaviour and emotional regulation using agreed strategies
Help the pupil access learning and participate fully in school life
Work collaboratively with teachers, SEND professionals, and parents/carers
Monitor progress and contribute to individual support plans
Promote independence while providing appropriate levels of guidance
Maintain a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment
Desired Experience + Qualifications
Previous experience working as a Learning Support Assistant, Teaching Assistant, or 1:1 Mentor
Experience supporting pupils with SEMH or additional learning needs
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
Patient, resilient, and empathetic approach
Ability to remain calm and consistent in challenging situations
Strong understanding of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing
DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one
Experience working in a specialist SEND or alternative provision setting
Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
Ability to motivate and inspire young people
Excellent teamwork and organisational skills
Commitment to supporting pupils' long-term development
Ability to work full-time (08:30 – 16:30)
