Job Description

As an Autism Support Guide, you will provide tailored support to pupils with autism across a structured SEND setting. You will help pupils understand routines, engage with learning tasks, regulate emotions, and develop communication and independence skills. Working closely with teachers, therapists, and the SENCo, you will follow individual support plans that outline the specific approaches each pupil needs.

You will use visual timetables, sensory strategies, step-by-step modelling, and simplified language to reduce overwhelm and help pupils feel safe and ready to learn. Much of your role takes place in the classroom, but you may also deliver short, targeted sessions focusing on social communication, emotional expression, or sensory regulation. Pupils may present with a mix of communication differences, sensory needs, high anxiety, or challenges with transitions.

This position is ideal for someone who is calm, observant, and committed to creating environments where autistic pupils can learn, communicate, and grow at a pace that works for them.

Support pupils with autism using structured communication and sensory strategies.
Implement visual schedules, social stories, and low-demand approaches.
Provide one-to-one and small-group guidance during learning tasks.
Monitor triggers, signs of overwhelm, and early indicators of dysregulation.
Work closely with teaching and therapy teams to review pupil progress.

Desired Experience
+ Qualifications

Experience supporting autistic pupils or learners with social communication differences.
Patient, calm, and emotionally attuned approach.
Understanding of sensory needs and regulation strategies.
Ability to apply structured interventions and follow support plans.
Strong safeguarding awareness.

About the School

This Birmingham (B34) SEND school is highly regarded for its autism-specialist provision, calm environment, and commitment to supporting pupils through structured, responsive teaching. With a Good Ofsted rating, the school offers a predictable, low-arousal setting where pupils are supported with visual communication tools, sensory-informed routines, and highly personal learning pathways.

The school works closely with therapists and external professionals to ensure needs are met holistically. Classrooms are organised with clear zones, visual prompts, and sensory supports that help pupils feel grounded and confident. Staff are trained in autism practice, de-escalation, communication development, and emotional resilience strategies.

Families frequently praise the school for its transparency, compassion, and its focus on small but meaningful steps forward. Leadership places strong emphasis on staff training, teamwork, and reflective practice, ensuring every adult feels supported in their role.

For someone who enjoys building trust slowly, celebrating small milestones, and working within a specialist setting, this is an exceptional environment to grow your SEND expertise.

But, I don’t want to register with a supply agency, why should I sign up with Milestone?

How much does it cost and how much will I be paid?

Our services to you are completely free.

Costs will only incur if you require a new DBS or OSPC, but don't worry - we can still put you forward for interviews while the applications in process, so you won't miss out on all the exciting opportunities!
