Birmingham

Full time

£85 – £95 per day

Vacancy ID

Job Description

This role is perfect for someone who loves being the steady presence pupils can rely on throughout the school day. As a Pastoral and Learning Assistant, you’ll work across classrooms and small group spaces to support learning, wellbeing and social development. Instead of staying attached to one year group, you’ll support pupils based on need—whether that’s helping a child regulate after a tricky morning, assisting with literacy groups, or acting as a key adult for pupils who benefit from consistent encouragement. The school uses a proactive and relational approach to behaviour, meaning you’ll be working alongside teachers, SENCOs and pastoral leads to create an environment that’s calm, respectful and engaging. You’ll have the chance to introduce creative strategies, support interventions and contribute to planning for targeted learners. It’s a brilliant role for someone who wants purpose in their day-to-day work without feeling boxed in.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide small group and in-class learning support
Build trusted relationships with pupils who need pastoral guidance
Assist with wellbeing interventions and social skills work
Support staff in maintaining routines and transitions
Contribute to pupil profiles and liaison with pastoral teams

Desired Experience
+ Qualifications

Experience supporting children in school, youth or childcare environments
Warm, attentive and solution-focused communication style
Awareness of SEMH, SEND or safeguarding needs
Ability to adapt support depending on the situation
Willingness to follow school policies and undertake DBS checks

About the School

Based in South Birmingham, this Ofsted-rated Good primary school is known for its strong pastoral framework and community-minded ethos. Leadership prioritises early intervention and emotional wellbeing as a foundation for learning, which means staff have the freedom to try initiatives that genuinely help children feel safe and engaged. The school has growing success in literacy and numeracy outcomes due to its focus on tailored support and inclusive provision. With a mixed social demographic, they pride themselves on knowing each pupil as an individual and working closely with families to sustain progress. Staff benefit from collaborative planning, approachable leadership and access to CPD linked to behaviour, SEMH and SEND support. They place high importance on celebrating cultural diversity, resilience and pupil voice. If you want to work in a setting where pastoral care is seen as essential rather than an add-on, this role offers the chance to make a daily impact in a supportive team.
