Job Description
This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a setting where no two days feel the same and every pupil has a bespoke pathway. As a SEND Mentor, you'll work directly with pupils who need additional guidance, regulation support and encouragement to access learning. You’ll build trusting relationships, provide one-to-one emotional support, and help learners overcome barriers caused by anxiety, communication challenges, sensory needs, or social difficulties. Rather than sticking to a rigid timetable, you’ll adapt your approach depending on pupil needs—supporting inside and outside the classroom, in calm breakout spaces, therapeutic areas, and structured learning sessions. You’ll work closely with specialist teachers, pastoral leads and therapists to deliver consistent, trauma-informed support. This is a proactive, people-centred role for someone who genuinely wants to champion young people with complex needs and celebrate their progress in real time.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide one-to-one and small group social, emotional and learning support
Help pupils regulate through sensory breaks, movement, or structured calming strategies
Assist teachers with adapted classroom activities and communication approaches
Maintain positive behaviour support using de-escalation and encouragement
Monitor individual progress and contribute to support plans
Desired Experience
+ Qualifications
Experience supporting pupils with SEND in any setting (school, care, youth work etc.)
Calm, patient and empathetic communication style
Understanding of autism, SEMH, or complex needs
Willingness to use therapeutic and person-centred approaches
DBS on the update service or willingness to apply
About the School
This Birmingham-based specialist provision is rated Good by Ofsted and is known for its structured, therapeutic approach to supporting pupils with complex SEND and SEMH needs. The school focuses on building resilience, communication, independence and emotional regulation through tailored support and pastoral care. Class sizes are small and each group is supported by a skilled team, including teachers, mentors and behaviour specialists. The leadership team prioritises inclusivity, staff training and wellbeing, ensuring employees feel valued and equipped to respond to individual needs. The environment includes sensory rooms, calm spaces, therapeutic outdoor areas, and access to speech and language, nurture interventions and occupational therapy where needed. The school ethos centres around recognising potential rather than behaviour alone, and they celebrate small wins as much as major milestones. Staff often comment on the strong sense of team support and the rewarding nature of watching pupils grow in confidence and engagement. If you want a SEND role where emotional intelligence is as valued as classroom experience, this is a great fit.
